Sometimes my instincts are as good as I think.
My sister and I go to the gym together at least four mornings a week; last night, not quite certain why I felt it so strongly, I sent my sister a text message to preempt our daily workout. Niksdad started a new job today —his first as an LPN— but didn’t need to leave until well after I would normally be home and showered. Nik has had a couple of bumpy days since we’ve begun to increase his Lamictal in preparation for weaning him from the Depakene for his seizures. (You may recall my recent revelations about the 18-month long saga of Nik’s mysterious, debilitating pain?) We’ve seen a recurrence of some of the disorientation and ataxia, as well as a marked decrease both in his appetite and his ability to cope with sudden, unexpected change.
Little did I know when I listened to the voice in my head last night that I would wake this morning to a very sick little boy. His usual happy morning singing and chirping were notably absent —replaced by whimpering and moaning instead. When I picked him up, Nik was burning up and his eyes were glassy. I’m fairly certain he has another ear infection —a whopper this time. His fever spiked to 103.7 degrees Fahrenheit and the poor little guy has passed out in the middle of the floor while playing with one of his favorite toys.
We see our pal, Dr. Mary, this afternoon.
Meanwhile, since I am not out racing around to Nik’s various appointments and such, I have time to catch up on a few blogging related things. You know, making lemonade and all that…
If you aren’t familiar with Alltop go check it out! It seems yours truly has “made the grade” and is included in their aggregate listings of “top sites” for autism on the web. I am honored to share the stage page with the likes of Kristina Chew, Vicki Forman, and a host of others. Just goes to show, there’s a little something for everyone out there!
Kind of makes up for my feeling like the kid who’s grounded while all her friends get to go to the prom BlogHer. I am so down that I cannot make the trip to meet up with some of my absolute favorite bloggers this side of the universe. Alas, I guess I’ll just have to continue my little boggy crushes from afar.
*SIGH*

Oh, no, poor Nik! Hope he feels better pronto. Glad you’ll be at the doctor later today. Congrats on being added to Alltop – and you’re right, the whole gang of parent writers is there, pretty much! Very cool!! I hope it brings you even more readers as other parents would learn so much from you.
I mean about Alltop. Not about Nik!
I just discovered your blog several days ago and look forward to reading more…my 14 year old son is on the spectrum…I’m not new to blogging, but to the world of “autism blogs” what a great resource…wish I knew about it years ago when I struggled so alone.
Congratulations!
I write about all aspects of our family as well.
You ARE a cool kid!! Hope Nik feels better soon…
Yes, trust your instincts dearie. Fingers crossed for you both.
Best wishes
Oh, poor you guys. Here’s some ˜˜˜get well vibes˜˜˜ for you guys.
And hey, I’m not getting to go to BlogHer, either. We can eat cyber ice cream together instead.
I am so sorry to hear Nik is sick. Sending hugs and prayers. Poor guy.
Congrats on the site!
I’m really sorry to hear about Nik but kudos on getting added to Alltop. Maybe if I kept up with my blog, I’d get added too (the irony being that the reason I can’t seem to find the time is not b/c of the new baby but rather because things are so hard with SB).
I’m so sorry – I hope Nik feels better soon!
I’m missing BlogHer, too – next year, ok?
Promise?
Ben was getting chronic ear infections, we were getting ready for the tubes, when somebody told me to go to a local chiropractor.
He said Ben was allergic to milk. We no longer gave him a bottle at night, cut down considerably (gave him juice with calcium added), and within a week he was walking and no more ear infections. He also began walking within the week.
We’ve never been to a chiropractor since, but I’m jus’ sayin…
Did I say he began walking within a week?
Sorry about Nik being sick. I know I’m giving out advice…it’s just that it was so immediate that it was a good thing!
r.b., thanks. I wish it would be so for Nik…but we’ve already been down that road. He’s already on the most allergy-friendly formula (prescription since he’s tube fed; gluten and casein free, too!). Between Nik’s reflux and his super tiny (and constantly malfunctioning) eustachian tubes, he really does need the tubes. This will be his 2nd set. And the adenoids swell and block the mouth end of the tubes so they simply cannot drain…gets ugly all the way around. This has been going on literally for years now.
But, I DO want to find a chiro for him to get some cranial/sacral work done; I think that would help his gait and also his need to constantly bite things that aren’t food. (And, of course, I could use a good chiro to help me with my shoulder…)
Hoping things are going smoother for you! Have a great weekend.
